Crowds gather at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, the building where President William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901, while receiving visitors at the Pan-American Exposition. He died eight days later, and his death brought Vice President Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency. Benjamin West Kilburn of Littleton, New Hampshire, produced many stereo cards like this one for home viewers, who saw the scene in three dimensions through a stereoscope. The card captures the exposition's public mood just before the tragedy.
