The poster is one of several that Buffalo printed to promote its 1901 fair, and its subject is Niagara Falls, about 20 miles north of the city. The Pan American Exposition ran from May 1 to November 1, 1901, and the falls were its most natural draw. Frederick Flagler Helmer designed the lettering and layout, and Gies & Company printed the poster in 1900, a year before the gates opened. The fair is also remembered for the shooting of President William McKinley there in September 1901, and Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office in Buffalo days later.
