The caption names this view as the birthplace of "M. Van Buren," most likely Martin Van Buren, the eighth president, who was born in 1782 in Kinderhook, New York, a Hudson River village with a strong Dutch-speaking community. He was the first president born after the Declaration of Independence, and he rose from village lawyer to the White House through New York state politics and the Albany political organization known as the Albany Regency. The print comes from a 1902 popular history of the United States, and its caption card is unverified, so the building shown is identified by the caption rather than by documentation.
