Here the Mexican eagle, the national emblem that also appears on Mexico's flag, is shown twice: whole before the war and stripped of its feathers after. The wood engraving ran in *Yankee Doodle*, a New York satirical weekly, in May 1847, while American forces were pushing deep into Mexico. Its joke mocked Mexican defeats and treated the war's outcome as settled, a view common in the American press of the day. Weekly papers like this one used cartoons to reach a broad readership with sharp political commentary.
