The national bird of the United States appears here as a single engraved emblem, and the eagle has served as a symbol of the nation since the Great Seal was adopted in 1782, when the bald eagle was chosen to hold the olive branch and arrows. Engraved designs like this one were the work of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the federal agency that produced currency, securities and official documents, and its craftsmen used fine lines and dense hatching to render feathers and talons. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of production is uncertain, but the subject ties it closely to the national iconography that the bureau reproduced for decades.
