Its title pairs "Pioneers of America" with the line "Westward the star of empire takes its way," a variant of a phrase many Americans knew well by 1897. The wording echoes George Berkeley's 1726 poem, whose line about the course of empire was later taken up as a slogan for westward expansion and given monumental form in Emanuel Leutze's 1861 mural in the U.S. Capitol. The print was registered for copyright on November 11, 1897, and its record associates it with Hunter & Co., though that attribution is unverified. The title turns a line of poetry into a patriotic message about settlers moving across the continent.
