On the way to Araby!" is a March 1836 lithograph by Edward Williams Clay, published in New York by H.R. Robinson. Its subjects include Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, and Nicholas Biddle, the Pennsylvania banker who headed the Second Bank of the United States, along with the Washington newspaper The Globe, which carried the Jackson administration's views. Jackson's campaign against the bank, often called the bank war, was among the sharpest political conflicts of the 1830s, and Clay's cartoons commented on it with pointed satire. This print is worth studying for how it links political leaders with the newspapers that shaped public opinion about them.
