Few caricatures of Henry Clay pair a medical complaint with a shopkeeper's notice as wryly as this one does. The print is signed "DCJ" for David Claypoole Johnston, a Boston artist who produced topical lithographs and woodcuts for a busy local and national market. In 1834 Clay was one of the most prominent opponents of President Andrew Jackson, and his fights over the Bank of the United States and executive power made him a frequent target for satirists. The sheet has been trimmed along its right edge, so the image runs close to the paper's border.
