*The Times, anno 1783* dates itself to a single spring, and its London publisher, W. Humphrey, issued it on April 14, 1783. The etching is attributed to James Gillray, who went on to become the most celebrated political caricaturist of his age. Its subject is John Bull, the stout symbol of the English nation, and the print ties him to the American war and the peace that followed. Britain was then settling the terms of independence for its former colonies, and satirical prints like this one reflected the public argument over what the country had lost and how it should move forward.
