Rather than a plain portrait, this lithograph casts Andrew Jackson as a mythic slayer battling a many-headed monster, a hydra-style image aimed at the Bank of the United States. The record names Nicholas Biddle, the bank's president, along with Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams and Martin Van Buren, which suggests the monster's heads stand for the bank's political allies and rivals. H. R. Robinson issued the print in New York in 1836, while Jackson's fight over the bank's federal charter was still shaping national politics. Cartoons like this one were a popular way for voters to follow those partisan battles.
