Engraved from a daguerreotype by Anthony Edwards & Co., this portrait shows Andrew Jackson in the last weeks before his death. The print is dated April 15, 1845, and Jackson died at his Tennessee home, The Hermitage, on June 8 of that year. T. Doney engraved the plate in New York and J. Neale printed it for the *Democratic Review*, a Democratic Party journal. The aquatint technique gives the portrait a soft tonal finish, and its photographic source shows how new daguerreotypes were beginning to shape the public image of national leaders.
