Winfield Scott, the aging general-in-chief of the Union army, is shown among his staff as orders go out for the advance in July 1861. The record names George W. Cullum, Schuyler Hamilton and Henry Van Rensselaer as the officers present, all connected with Scott's staff. The drawing is worth a closer look for its medium: pencil and Chinese white on olive paper, a combination that gives the figures soft tonal shading. The advance it depicts led to the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, the first major clash of the Civil War, which ended in a Union retreat.
