In this woodcut, a man treads grapes in a vat with his bare feet, one of the few scenes in the printed agricultural book that shows the physical labor of making wine. The image illustrates a Latin edition of *Opus ruralium commodorum*, the farming handbook compiled around 1305 by the Bolognese writer Pietro de' Crescenzi. Printed books of the late fifteenth century often carried woodcuts like this to show readers the work described in the text, and vintage scenes were a favorite subject because wine was central to both household economy and the monastic and estate life the treatise addressed.
