Few wartime prints place the president so squarely at the center of the army's leadership as this lithograph, which pairs Abraham Lincoln with the generals he depended on to win the Civil War. Issued around 1865 through publishers in New York and Boston, it reflects a period when Lincoln had finally settled on a commander, Ulysses S. Grant, after a long run of officers who had struggled to press the Union's advantage. Inexpensive prints like this one circulated widely among a public eager for images of the war's leaders.
