Grant appears here mounted among the officers who served under him, a group composition that was unusual for a color print of its time. The chromolithograph dates to 1865, the year Grant accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox and the Union's victory became settled fact. Chromolithography was then a fast, affordable way to put colorful likenesses of war heroes into parlors and public rooms, and this sheet reflects the postwar appetite for images that celebrated the commanders who had won the conflict.
