The title names this figure as an aged man in a winter garment, a detail that sets it apart from the young warriors and women that dominate the Virginia watercolors. John White made the original drawing in the 1580s, when he was recording the Algonquian-speaking peoples of the Roanoke region for English audiences. This print is a photographic reproduction from the 1940s, and a color version appeared in a 1965 edition of the New World pictures engraved by Theodore de Bry. White gives the man's clothing and posture the same careful attention he gave younger subjects, and that attention to daily dress is what makes these images valuable to historians.
