Jackson, the seat of Amador County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is the subject of this half of a stereograph, number 865 in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. The town grew out of the Gold Rush, when prospectors worked the nearby creeks and quartz veins, and by the mid-1860s it was a settled mining community. Stereo views like this one were sold for home viewers, who saw depth and distance through a stereoscope. Only one print of the original pair survives in this collection, and its caption details come from an old card that has since been revised, so some dates may be uncertain.
