Few places in California drew more visitors in the 1860s than the Mammoth Grove in Calaveras County, where a hotel stood among the giant sequoias. Settlers first reported these trees to the outside world in 1852, and the grove soon became a favorite stop for travelers from San Francisco and beyond. This print is one half of a stereograph from the Gems of California series, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly different camera positions into a single image with depth. Notice how the hotel looks small beside the trunks, a contrast that was central to the appeal of such views.
