Taken from the grounds of Columbia's public school, this stereograph surveys one of the best-known gold camps in Tuolumne County. Columbia boomed after gold was discovered nearby in 1850, and its miners and merchants earned it the nickname "Gem of the Mines." The Library holds only one half of the original pair, which was issued as number 978 in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. Albumen prints like this one, mounted for viewing through a stereoscope, were popular parlor entertainment in the 1860s, and views of mining towns gave armchair audiences a glimpse of the West.
