Columbia, in Tuolumne County, was one of the best-known gold camps in the California Sierra Nevada, and this view centers on the dump-box, the wooden frame at the lower end of a sluice where spent gravel was emptied after the gold had been caught. Placer mining like this, which used running water to wash gold out of loose gravel, reshaped the foothills during the 1850s and 1860s. The picture is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, meant to be viewed in depth through a stereoscope, and only this card survives here.
