Looking across the rooftops toward the Castelvecchio, this view of Verona shows the medieval fortress that the Scaligeri family built in the fourteenth century on the bank of the Adige River. By around 1900, the castle had long served as a military garrison, which explains the barracks buildings that stand beside it. The city had been part of a unified Italy for several decades, and the pairing of old fortification with newer army quarters shows how Verona reused its historic defenses. The high vantage point makes the street pattern and the river bend easy to trace.
