Indian Orchard, a village in Springfield, Massachusetts, is the setting for this view of the No. 2 spinning room at its cotton mill, taken on June 29, 1916. Lewis Hine made it for the National Child Labor Committee, which used his images of factory interiors to argue against child labor in American industry. Rows of spinning machinery stretch through the room, and the girls working among them are the subjects Hine was documenting. Spinning frames in cotton mills of this period required constant attention, so the scene shows both the scale of the equipment and the kind of work young employees were doing there.
