Rather than a street view, this wood engraving lifts the viewer above the Washburn & Moen Manufacturing Company works in Worcester, Massachusetts, and lays out its buildings and yards like a map. J.N. Allan cut the block for Lossing's 1876 volume, a book issued in the centennial year. Worcester was then one of New England's busiest manufacturing cities, and Washburn & Moen, a major wire maker, helped earn it that reputation. The high vantage point makes the sprawl of a works this size easy to read at a glance.
