Olympia, the state capital of Washington, sits at the southern tip of Puget Sound, and this view looks down on it from above with the snowy peaks of the Olympic Range rising behind the town. The bird's-eye perspective was a popular way in the early 1900s to show a growing city in full, with its streets, rooftops and waterfront laid out like a map. Photographs like this one were often used to promote a community to residents, investors and visitors. Set against the mountains, the image also shows how closely the young capital was tied to its dramatic natural setting.
