Few towns in the American West were planned as deliberately as Boulder City, which the federal government built in 1931 and 1932 to house workers on the Boulder Dam project along the Colorado River. This 1934 bird's-eye view looks down on its rows of houses set in open desert, with clouds drifting over the surrounding mountains. The town stood out for its orderly layout and its ban on gambling, which distinguished it from the casino towns nearby. From above, the new community appears laid out against a harsh landscape that the dam crews were rapidly changing.
