Drawn from above the Potomac and looking north, this view places the Washington Monument at the center of a capital still growing into its plan. The print reproduces a composition by C.R. Parsons that Currier & Ives first copyrighted in 1880, and this later edition keeps the same image apart from the sky. The monument was finished in 1884, after decades of stalled construction, and it was then the tallest structure in the city. Bird's-eye views like this one let viewers take in the monument, its surrounding streets, and the river frontage in a single glance.
