Taken from the South Ferry landing at the southern tip of Manhattan, this view looks north toward the elevated railway that carried passengers from the ferry into the city. Elevated lines had been operating since the 1870s, and their terminals near the waterfront made the area a busy transfer point for commuters arriving by boat from Staten Island and Brooklyn. Published around 1899 by the Sampson Stereoscopic Company, the card was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, so its paired images give the street and iron structure a sense of depth. It offers a useful glimpse of how the elevated trains shaped street life in Lower Manhattan at the turn of the century.
