Only one half of this stereograph pair survives in the Library's holdings, a view of Stockton taken from the south and looking north across the San Joaquin County town. Stockton was founded in 1849 as a supply point on the San Joaquin River during the gold rush, and by the 1860s it had grown into an inland port serving the surrounding farms. Stereo views like this one, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, were made for home viewing through a hand stereoscope, giving viewers a sense of depth in western towns. The 1866 date comes from an unverified caption card, so treat it as approximate.
