Among the town views of the 1860s, this one turns from scenery to industry, showing the Santa Cruz tannery at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River, looking south. Tanning was a common trade in nineteenth-century California, where hides were soaked in tannin-rich bark liquors to make leather, and a site near a river gave the works water for processing. The picture is one half of a stereograph issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series around 1866, and the Library holds only this half of the pair, so the three-dimensional effect the original viewer would have seen is not preserved here.
