Kanab Wash, where it meets the Colorado River, is the subject here: a deep canyon whose walls rise in stacked bands of rock, shot looking south. William Bell made the photograph in 1872 while working with the U.S. Army's survey of territory west of the 100th meridian, led by George M. Wheeler. Survey photographers carried heavy glass-plate cameras into remote country, and prints like this one, made by the albumen process, were issued in published sets so that officers, scientists and the public could see terrain that few had reached. As the first plate in its series, the view was meant to introduce the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau.
