Taken from the roof of the Senate wing, this August 1857 view looks south across the Capitol's east front toward the dome, where the first column of the new iron structure stands on the roof. Benjamin Brown French, who served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and oversaw the Capitol's expansion, compiled the album in which this print appears. The salted paper print shows the iron framing rising as the project took shape, when the familiar dome was still only partly built. The columns and the iron construction are the details worth noticing here.
