Mills along the Noyo River, a harbor on Mendocino County's Pacific coast, are the subject here, seen from a vantage that looks north across the working site. Redwood cut from the surrounding forests was sawn at mills like these and shipped by sea to San Francisco and other ports, which made the North Coast an important source of building lumber in the 1860s. The print is one half of a stereographic pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the Library holds only this half. The 1866 date is a bracketed publication estimate drawn from an unverified caption card.
