A granite lion stands before the gateway to Seoul's old Royal Palace in this view, with the gate itself rising just beyond it. The palace, Gyeongbokgung, was built in 1395 as the main seat of the Joseon dynasty, and its southern gate, Gwanghwamun, was rebuilt in the 1860s after long years of ruin. By around 1904, when Underwood & Underwood produced this stereograph, the city was absorbing growing foreign influence as the Korean monarchy struggled to keep its independence. Stereo cards like this were sold widely to American and European viewers who wanted to see distant places in three dimensions.
