Looking north from the new State Capitol, this view runs across Sacramento's street grid, with Ninth Street along the right edge of the frame. The state moved its seat to Sacramento in 1854, and the Capitol was a major building project through the early 1860s, so the picture shows a town still growing into its role as the seat of government. The Library holds only one half of what was issued as a stereo pair, part of a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. Albumen prints like this were the standard medium for such cards in the 1860s, and viewed through a stereoscope, the two paired images gave the flat street plan a sense of depth.
