Three separate bird's-eye panoramas share this one sheet, each looking down on Salt Lake City from a high vantage point so that the street grid, blocks, and surrounding mountains read at a glance. Latter-day Saint settlers laid out the city in 1847 on a regular grid of wide streets, and by 1891 it had grown into a railroad and mining center at the foot of the Wasatch Range, with the Great Salt Lake to the west. Lithographed city views like this were a popular way for towns of that era to present themselves to investors, settlers, and residents, and they still show clearly how the original plan filled in.
