Seen from above in the Arkansas River valley of central Colorado, Buena Vista was the seat of Chaffee County, which had been organized only a few years before this sheet appeared. Publishers such as J.J. Stoner issued bird's eye views like this one to show a town's streets, buildings and surroundings in a single drawing, and the format was popular with boomtown promoters. Buena Vista served as a supply and transport point for the nearby mining camps, so a view like this also served to advertise the community to investors and newcomers. The record associates the drawing with the lithographic firm Beck & Pauli, though that attribution is unverified.
