A bird's-eye vantage lifts the Texas State Capitol in Austin above the streets around it, a angle that stereo publishers of the period often used to show off the size of a civic building. Completed in 1888 from pink granite quarried near Marble Falls, the capitol was designed by Elijah E. Myers and was widely praised as one of the largest state capitols in the country. This stereograph was copyrighted by the Standard Scenic Company and is dated to about 1909, when panoramic views of landmarks sold well to home viewers. Seen through a stereoscope, the paired images would have given the building and its grounds a sense of depth.
