Marblehead's crowded harbor is the subject here, seen from above as a bird's-eye view with boats riding the water below the town. The picture dates to about 1912 and is a photographic print, one of a series of town views made in the 1910s by the photographer Fred B. Litchman, whose copyright registration is noted in the record. Marblehead was a working fishing port on the North Shore of Massachusetts, and its waterfront of moored hulls and wharves reflected a maritime economy that shaped the town for generations. Look closely at the mix of sail and small craft packed along the shore to get a sense of how the harbor was used at the time.
