The Arno winds through the middle of Pisa, and the cathedral complex with its leaning bell tower stands out as the city's most recognizable landmark, making it a natural subject for an elevated panorama. This print reproduces a view of the city from the 1860-1900 period, originally an etching, possibly finished with aquatint for tone. The reproduction itself dates from between 1900 and 1940, when copies of older prints were widely made for libraries and collectors. Nineteenth-century viewers prized these views because they showed an entire town at once from a height no ordinary observer could reach.
