Taken at the Cornell Mill in Fall River, Massachusetts, in January 1912, this view of the spinning room shows young boys and girls working among rows of machinery. Fall River was among the largest cotton-textile centers in the country, and its mills employed many children on daily shifts. The picture is attributed to Lewis Hine, who worked for the National Child Labor Committee to document such conditions and build public support for reform. Its record refers to a companion photograph that names some of the children, a reminder that investigators often tried to identify the young workers they recorded.
