The Imperial Naval Arsenal in Istanbul was the Ottoman Empire's principal shipyard, set along the Golden Horn, and this albumen print shows it from a broad, elevated vantage point. It was made by Abdullah Frères, the photography firm that served the Ottoman court, and it comes from an album captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French that belonged to the collection of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. Dating from roughly 1880 to 1893, it documents a period when the empire was modernizing its navy and displaying that effort to visitors and officials. The wide view makes the arsenal's layout of docks, buildings, and vessels easy to follow.
