Rather than the mosque itself, this print focuses on the courtyards and streets of the neighborhood around the Sultan Beyazit Camii in Istanbul, an early sixteenth-century imperial mosque built under Bayezid II. The Abdullah Frères studio made it between about 1880 and 1893, when the firm was among the best-known commercial photographers working in the Ottoman capital. Captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French, it comes from an album of Istanbul, the Bosporus and the Princes' Islands that belonged to the Abdul Hamid II collection, and it shows how daily life unfolded in the shadow of a major religious landmark.
