Framed as a prize fight, this 1860 lithograph casts the presidential race as a contest between Abraham Lincoln and John C. Breckinridge, with the White House as the prize. Its subject list also names slavery, African Americans and South Carolina, pointing to the question that divided the country that year: whether slavery would expand into the territories. Breckinridge, the Southern Democratic candidate, won most of the Deep South, while Lincoln won the presidency without carrying a single Southern state. The title's word "undecided" captures a campaign whose result was far from certain when the print appeared.
