The title, *Candidates from the exempt brigade*, points to men who avoided military service, and the catalog subjects of army, draft, farming and Fort Lafayette suggest the cartoon ties that avoidance to agricultural work and to the fort in New York Harbor, which held political prisoners during the Civil War. William E. S. Trowbridge drew the design, and the Library of Congress received its copyright deposit in late August 1862, when the Union was still building its manpower and debating who should be liable for service. Read today, the print offers a sharp view of how wartime partisans argued over fairness in the draft.
