Recess on the playground of the Sixth Division school in Washington, D.C., is the focus here, with children at play rather than in the classroom. The picture comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's album of the city's public schools, and its date is given as around 1899. Johnston, one of the most prominent photographers of her day, documented schools in the capital during the 1890s, when public education there was expanding. The cyanotype process she used produced the distinctive blue-and-white print, and it was inexpensive and reliable for recording such everyday scenes. Looking closely, you can see how schoolyards of that era were used for informal play and daily routine.
