A small pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper shows the 6th Michigan Cavalry charging rebel earthworks near Falling Waters, dated July 14, 1863. The town, then in Virginia and now in West Virginia, sat on Lee's line of retreat after Gettysburg, and the fighting there was a rearguard clash as Confederate forces pulled back toward the Potomac. Its quick, loose handling suggests a sketch made close to the action, and its subject headings note casualties, a reminder of what the charge cost.
