The title refers to a specific flag: the one Major Robert Anderson lowered over Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April 1861, when Confederate batteries forced his surrender and opened the Civil War. Here the flag flies again over the fort, a picture of Union authority restored. The print was entered for copyright on March 31, 1865, weeks before Anderson returned to raise the flag in a ceremony on April 14, the fourth anniversary of the surrender. The record lists Kimmel & Forster as an associated name, though that attribution is unverified.
