Fort Myer, on the Virginia side of the Potomac across from Washington, was where the Army's Signal Corps tested its early aircraft, and this airship was photographed in that setting. The Signal Corps ran the Army's aeronautical work from the post in the first years of the twentieth century, experimenting with balloons, dirigibles and the Wright airplane. The caption card gives no date, so the picture is best read as one record of that brief, experimental period, when the Army was still deciding how lighter-than-air craft might serve reconnaissance and communication.
