This pencil drawing records a ball held by the 2nd Corps on Washington's birthday, February 22, 1864, a social event set apart from the usual scenes of camp life. The corps, commanded by Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, was then encamped near Brandy Station in Virginia, where the Army of the Potomac spent the winter months after the Mine Run campaign. Dances and gatherings like this one gave officers and men a brief break from drill and picket duty, and marking Washington's birthday tied the evening to the nation's past. The drawing shows how the event was recorded at the time, in a quick, portable medium suited to camp.
