The title, "The man of the people, the foot-ball of the people," casts a public figure as a ball kicked about by the crowd, a theme that suits the crowded politics of 1784. The imprint places the publisher at the White Lion on Bull Stairs, Surrey side of Black Fryers Bridge in London, a busy printing district. That year followed the collapse of the Fox-North coalition and the bitterly contested Westminster election, when satirists often pictured popular opposition politicians as pawns of the electorate. The record attributes the print to J. Barrow only with a question mark, so the maker should be treated as tentative.
